OUR NATURAL EARTH

OUR NATURAL EARTH

For this month’s Papergang box we are focusing on good old Mother Earth. She’s done us proud over the years; provided us with some pretty good air to breathe, tasty food, along with some weird and wonderful creatures. Let’s give her a round of applause! However, because us human folk can be a bit greedy, our wonderful planet isn’t very happy. We talk about how we’re impacting our home and what you can do to help preserve our beautiful Earth.

WHO NEEDS OUR HELP?

The Bat

Whether you think these lil’ guys are cute or creepy, our flappy friends are in need of our help! Bat populations have been on the decline due to threats to their habitats, food destruction and disease. With 24 bat species currently listed as critically endangered, they risk extinction. Bat populations are slow to reproduce, with females only bearing one pup per year. This means that when the population is hit with a decline, it can be tedious bringing their numbers back up. The main cause of bat decline is deforestation and habitat loss; with green spaces being destroyed for farming, homes or more city sprawl, our flying mammal friends have nowhere to roost. What can you do to help? Promote a natural space for bats to roost! Leaving your dead or dying trees where they aren’t in the way is a perfect way to encourage our bat friends. They may not look appealing to the human eye, but to bats it’s paradise!

The Polar Bear

We’ve all heard of the threat to polar bears; they’re one of the primary animals that face the consequences of global warming. With the on-going loss of their sea ice habitat, polar bears are being pushed more and more inland. Their primary source of food comes from hunting on the ice, without this landscape, their access to food becomes less and less. It’s not just food that is sourced from the ice. These cold white plains are the perfect place for rest and breeding. What can you do to help? Even though you may feel like your actions at home aren’t going to do anything to help the wider problem, you’re entirely wrong! Imagine if everyone on the planet took steps to reduce their impact on the planet. Simple things like switching to A-grade energy appliances, opting for a renewable energy company and even avoiding products with excess packaging all help in reducing your carbon footprint, and in return the emissions going into the environment around us.

The Monkey, Ape & Chimp

Our good selves are very closely linked to our primate friends. With us humans sharing around 98% of our DNA with chimpanzees! Like humans, apes and chimpanzees have complex emotions and intelligence, making them creatures of amazing capabilities. Unfortunately 60% of primate species are now threatened with extinction, mainly from hunting, logging, agriculture and climate impacts. The palm oil industry also has a big part to play. Our high consumption for cheap palm oil is wiping our chimpanzee and orangutan populations, areas are being destroyed to meet our high needs for the oil. Sadly palm oil is everywhere; it’s in our shampoo, crisps and even lipstick! What can you do to help? As habitat is a major cause as to why our primate friends are on the decline, you can take steps to reduce your impact in this sector. Consider reducing your meat consumption, as cattle farming is a major cause of deforestation. Due to the impact of palm oil, find out what products don’t contain the harmful oil and what changes you can make to your food items and beauty products.

THREE THINGS

@leskoletsgo.jpg

Plastic - Plastic lasts forever. Yes, FOREVER. It’s a material that never degrades, it just turns into microplastics; small, tiny beads of plastic that work their way into the food chain and ecosystem. In fact, the problem of plastic is so bad, that every human on earth will probably have plastic in some form in their body. Gross hu? It’s not just us humans, by 2050 it’s estimated that 99% of sea birds will have consumed some form of plastic when searching for food. There are literally “trash islands” in the middle of the Pacific Ocean getting bigger and bigger each day. With plastic being such an impact on the planet, it will form a noticeable line in the sedimentary rocks of the future.

Carbon - With agriculture, car and factory emissions heading off into the atmosphere, our ozone layer is now in a fragile state. There is a prominent “ozone hole” over the Antarctic, that has more than tripled in size over the past 40 years. Animals and humans that now live in the area under the hole are at threat of increased solar radiation, this includes skin cancer and even eye damage.

Greenery - Deforestation is a primary problem when it comes to the planet and our animals. As covered in the page before, many species are losing their homes and are forced to make do with limited access to food and safe spaces. Alongside this, the amount of carbon that green spaces absorb is a major positive for our planet. Without our rainforests, carbon is left to head into the atmosphere causing temperatures to rise and ozone to deplete
